Vitra Eames House Whale
Eames House Whale is a striking design object inspired by one of the most beloved pieces from the Eames personal collection.
Charles and Ray Eames surrounded themselves with folk art and found objects gathered through travel, curiosity, and a deep appreciation for form. Their home became an ever-evolving collage, arranged with both seriousness and joy. As Ray Eames once noted, they collected not for the sake of collecting, but because something inherent in an object made it worth living with and looking at.
Among the most prominent objects in their collection was the Eames House Whale, an anonymous work of North American folk art measuring nearly six feet long. The painted whale held a permanent place in the Eames Office and appeared frequently in photographs, including the earliest images of the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman.
This hand-painted replica is produced in collaboration with longtime partner Vitra and faithfully captures the character and presence of the original. Crafted from solid ash wood, the Eames House Whale is both a sculptural centerpiece and a meaningful expression of the Eameses’ approach to collecting, design, and everyday living.
