Vintage Eames Molded Plywood Splint offers a rare opportunity to own a meaningful piece of design and wartime history.

Designed in 1943, the Eames Molded Leg Splints were Charles and Ray Eames’ response to a critical medical problem during World War II. The standard metal splints used at the time often caused additional injury due to vibration. Drawing on their experiments with molded plywood in their Los Angeles home, the Eameses developed a lightweight, supportive alternative that improved patient outcomes.

An estimated 150,000 splints were produced and used during the war, marking a pivotal moment in both medical design and the Eameses’ creative evolution. Years later, the Eames Office uncovered a limited number of original splints and made them available to collectors. These objects are both visually striking and historically significant, representing an early milestone that helped shape the Eames approach to materials, form, and problem-solving.

The splints remain in their original wrapping with the original sticker intact. The wrapping is not opened to inspect individual condition, though condition can be reasonably assessed from the exterior. Due to their vintage nature, all sales are final.
