Arthur Elrod: Desert Modern Design by Adele Cygelman
Arthur Elrod: Desert Modern Design by Adele Cygelman is the first monograph devoted to Arthur Elrod, the celebrated interior designer who defined desert modern style in Palm Springs during the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. Widely regarded as the most successful interior designer in the region during his career, Elrod helped shape the look and lifestyle of midcentury desert living.
From primary residences and vacation homes to country clubs, speculative developments, and experimental houses, Elrod’s forward-thinking interiors appeared throughout Palm Springs and across the United States. Known for his charisma and tireless work ethic, he attracted an elite clientele that included Lucille Ball and Walt Disney. His most iconic project was his own residence, the Elrod House in Palm Springs, designed by architect John Lautner in 1968.
Elrod’s rise coincided with the growth of modernist architecture in the California desert, and he collaborated with many of the era’s most influential architects. His work intersected with that of E. Stewart Williams, William F. Cody, Paul R. Williams, Buff and Hensman, A. Quincy Jones, Wexler and Harrison, Palmer and Krisel, Howard Lapham, Richard Dorman, Edward Fickett, and John Lautner.
Tragically, Elrod’s life was cut short in 1974 when he was killed by a drunk driver at the age of 49. This richly detailed biography offers a comprehensive and intimate look at the life, work, and legacy of a midcentury design visionary. It is an essential volume for fans of Palm Springs history, midcentury modern design, and American interior architecture.
