The Art Benches of Palm Springs Poster
Destination PSP is proud to present The Art Benches of Palm Springs Poster!
In 2019 Palm Springs considered replacing the dozens of concrete benches at a cost of more than $400,000. Local business owners, in conjunction with the Palm Springs Public Arts Commission offered to test hiring local artists to transform the benches.
After the first dozen were completed, the pandemic hit and the project stalled. Then, in an effort inspired by the Public Works of Art Project during the Great Depression, the business owners approached the Arts Commission with the idea of using the Art Benches project to do good in the community.
Using Public Arts funds which come from developers fees and are restricted to public arts use, the groups launched the citywide Art Benches of Palm Springs projects. More than 70 local artists, many of whom were out of work, were paid $1000 each or more to paint a bench. The artists were strategically placed near local businesses that complemented their style. The Art Benches has now become a phenomenon where residents and tourists tour the business district to eat, shop and view the benches. The Bureau of Tourism uses the Art Benches Project as a tourist attraction.
And now Destination PSP Creative Director Tom Dolle has designed the Art Benches of Palm Springs poster featuring a selection of the benches.
The poster is available for sale at Destination PSP in store and online. Proceeds from the sale of the poster will fund additional public arts projects.
It's what we call a win-win-win-win-win situation!
